New York Fashion Week-Gabby Edition

New York City

I learned so many things from this trip to New York City. I have never been to New York, so for my first trip to be able to participate in New York Fashion Week is an amazing feeling. Before this trip I was fearful of myself. I say that meaning I was fearful I was not good enough, that this was not my calling, and that I didn’t deserve greatness. After this trip I felt confident in myself, that I could accomplish anything I was willing to work towards. I did hair in New York Fashion Week!!!

Walking up to a building located in Chelsea, we were directed to a table that had a paper with our names. We were given a wrist band and instructed to go up the stairs. There were models, make-up artists and hair stylists everywhere. We had to set up our table with wands, pins, hair spray, everything needed to achieve the looks. We then were gathered around the model board, it showed each model with the style needed for the show. Tippi, then did a test run showing how to achieve the look. Each stylist was responsible for a model.

Our model Lula was stunning. We curled her natural hair and teased the strands to give a a natural messy look, while using the Aveda Shine Spray.  I also assisted a different stylist, it’s really a team effort backstage and you definitely hop in when needed. Backstage of the Hellessy show I learned about how much work it takes to put a show together. When I think of shows I think of lights, camera, action during the fashion show. I was in for a surprise when I saw all the bloggers and camera crews entering backstage. Seeing Tippi answer questions on the spot about the looks created made me think, “I want to do that! I want to be the Hair Team Lead. I want to sit down with a designer help create and bring light to their vision for their show.”

“I can’t wait for her hair (our model Lula) to be done I know it’s going to be an amazing shot”,  a photographer stated. To have the photographer waiting for the hair specifically gave affirmation to how important hair can be in not only New York Fashion Week, but in our every days lives. It gave me affirmation that what I do is important and impactful. This trip not only encouraged me to continue to grow in my career, but to remember how much I can change someone’s view of themselves with my talents.
